Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Kumarakom Kerala
|
This
14 acres island on the backwater of Kerala is basically a major backwater
destination. The place is simply packed with mangrove forests, paddy fields,
coconut groves. Visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, it has got beautiful rivulets and
waterways. The scenic Vembanad Lake surrounded by mangrove forests and paddy
fields is one of the best places for bird viewing inside the sanctuary. A
large population of feathered species along with a pleasant climate make it
a great picnic spot in Kumarakom. The avian population of the sanctuary
constitutes numerous resident and rare migratory birds.
Climate
Due to its close proximity to the sea, this backwater town experiences a
moderate climate throughout the year with heavy rains during monsoons(June
to August). Visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, the sanctuary receives an average annual rainfall of 310 cms.
Winter starts from December and continues till February with an average
maximum temperature of 25 degrees C . During summers the average maximum
temperature goes up to 35 degrees C. The ideal time to visit the sanctuary
is between the months of June and August. One can spot a rich number of
migratory birds from November to February.

including several migratory species like the Siberian crane. One can see a
rich variety of local birds like kingfisher, water fowl, owl, egret, heron
and ducks. In winters the park hosts a varied species of migratory birds
including the rare Siberian crane, teal, larks, parrots, flycatchers, wood
beetles etc.

one at a distance of 70 kms from Kumarakom city centre and around 106 km
from the sanctuary. It is connected with some major cities of India by
regular air service.
» Rail - Kottayam is the nearest railhead, about 15
kms from the sanctuary. Regular express trains connect the city with other
parts of India.
» Road - The Kerala State Road Transport
Corporation runs buses from Kochi, Trivandrum, Alleppey, Thekkady, Kollam,
Kozhikode and Bangalore to Kottayam. The distance from Kottayam bus stand to
sanctuary is about 15 kms. Local buses and taxis are available from the
KSRTC Bus Stand.
