Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary In Kerala

Located
in the scenic hill station of Munnar(15km), Kerala, the Eravikulam Wildlife
Sanctuary In Kerala was set up to protect the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, one of the major
species of wild goat. Earlier it was a hunting preserve during British rule.
Later in 1978, the park was notified as a national park. The sanctuary comes
under the Idukki district of Kerala and extends to Tamil Nadu in the North.
The entire landscape of the park is divided into three regions- the core
area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are only allowed in the
tourism area of Rajamallay region on the south-west of the park.

The park can be visited throughout the year but the most ideal season is
during the months of November and April. The average maximum and minimum
temperature of the park are around 23 and 8 degrees C respectively. April
and May are the hottest month when temperature rises up to 23 degrees C and
the region receives heavy rainfall from June to August due to the south-west
monsoon. Visit to Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary India and the northeast monsoon also brings little rainfall during September
and December. In winters the temperature sometimes falls below freezing
point during night.
Wildlife Species
» Flora - The main vegetation of the park includes
tropical evergreen forest with grass lands and shrub land.
» Fauna - The major inhabitant of the park is the
Nilgiri Tahr but one can also find several other animals such as the Atlas
Moth, elephant, sambhar, gaurs, nilgiri langur, tiger and elephant.

Avi-fauna - The park is an excellent place for bird watchers who can
feast their eyes on a varied species of bird life such as the green imperial
pigeon, dove, fly-catchers, pipits, babblers and thrushes.

There are a number of staying options at Eravikulam. Visitors can find
hotels and resorts of different categories to suit their budget. Kerala
Tourism Department Corporation runs guest houses which offer excellent
facilities to its guests. Some of the well known hotels and resorts are
namely the Tea County Resort, Edassery Eastend, High Range Club, Gayatri
Munnar Retreat and the Elysium Garden Resort.

good motorable road network.
